Navigating Graduate Recruitment in the Digital Age: Insights from Raoul Bollen at MIUC’s ConnectEd Initiative
Earlier this month, Raoul Bollen, MSc a distinguished Human Resources executive with experience at Shell and HRM Refinery CA USA, delivered an insightful lecture at MIUC as part of the ConnectEd initiative.
The session, titled “Winning in Graduate Recruitment,” provided students with a deep understanding of how to navigate the competitive job market, develop key employability skills, and stand out in recruitment processes.
The lecture explored the evolving landscape of graduate recruitment, emphasising the two primary approaches used by organisations: career-based recruitment and skills-based recruitment.
Career-based recruitment focuses on long-term workforce planning, where companies aim to develop future leaders through structured graduate programmes. On the other hand, skills-based recruitment is immediate and vacancy-driven, designed to fill urgent talent gaps based on specific technical and professional skills.
Raoul Bollen explained that understanding these recruitment models is crucial for graduates to align their career aspirations with the right opportunities.
A major focus of the session was the impact of AI and digital transformation on recruitment.
As industries rapidly integrate AI into their operations, employers now prioritise candidates with analytical skills, technological proficiency, and adaptability. Raoul highlighted that organisations with a strong innovation culture are best positioned to generate value from digital technologies and generative AI. Graduates seeking to secure roles in this evolving landscape must develop a mindset of agility, innovation, and governance awareness to succeed.
Students also gained practical insights into the recruitment process, including screening, shortlisting, psychometric testing, and AI-driven assessments.
A key takeaway was the importance of mastering the STARR interview model—an approach that evaluates candidates based on Situation, Task, Actions, Results, and Reflections. Employers increasingly assess applicants based on their ability to overcome resistance, build trust with challenging stakeholders, integrate multiple data sources, and adjust their communication style for different audiences. Raoul advised students to log examples of their experiences to provide compelling evidence of their competencies during interviews.
One of the session’s most valuable insights was how graduates can stand out in the job market.
While academic achievements, such as degree classification and coursework, remain essential qualifiers, recruiters now seek candidates who demonstrate self-awareness, adaptability, and emotional intelligence.
The best applicants are those who actively reflect on their personal and professional growth, seek feedback, and continuously develop their skills. Raoul encouraged students to document their learning journey and build a portfolio of experiences that illustrate their ability to navigate challenges, communicate effectively, and contribute meaningfully to an organisation.
The session concluded with a discussion on the importance of well-being and purpose in career success.
Students were encouraged to align their job search with their personal values, aspirations, and long-term goals. The best applicants are not only those who possess the right skills but also those who understand what drives them, what they are willing to invest in, and where they can make the most impact.
Raoul Bollen’s lecture provided an invaluable roadmap for MIUC students, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to approach graduate recruitment strategically. By understanding how organisations hire, developing the necessary skills, and positioning themselves effectively, students can increase their employability and successfully launch their careers in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.
