Peer Mentoring Scheme

What is Peer Mentoring?

Peer Mentoring pairs new students with peers who have already completed at least a year of study, often within the same course. Mentors share their knowledge of MIUC, their programme, and student life, giving you a clearer picture of what’s ahead and how to get the most from your university experience.

As a mentee, you’ll meet regularly with your mentor, who can answer questions, offer guidance, and help you feel more confident as you settle in. For mentors, the scheme is also an opportunity to give back, develop leadership skills, and support the MIUC community. Pairings are based on course and level of study, with additional preferences considered where possible.

Becoming a Peer Mentor

If you’ve completed at least one year of study at MIUC, you can volunteer to become a Peer Mentor. To get started, simply complete the application form or sign up for one of the training sessions. Training is provided online by the UWL Peer Mentoring Scheme, and once it’s complete, your application will be reviewed and the pairing process will begin. When a suitable match is found, you’ll be introduced to your mentee by email.

Being a Peer Mentor is flexible and can fit around your schedule. It’s an opportunity to use your own student experience to guide someone new, helping them reach their potential and make the most of their time at MIUC. No matter your grades, your journey here can have a positive impact on another student.

Peer Mentoring Certificate

All Peer Mentors receive official recognition for their contribution. If you complete at least four hours of mentoring – including the two hours of training – you’ll be awarded a volunteering certificate to acknowledge your commitment and impact.

Student Welfare Support

We offer fully confidential counseling to every student through our Student Welfare Support system. Whenever something feels heavy or confusing, you can reach out – the team will sit with you, figure out what’s going on, and help you move through it.

The Student Welfare Support team is here to help you set realistic goals, stay grounded, and feel supported throughout your time at MIUC. Whether it’s homesickness, anxiety, friendship struggles, or just the general chaos of adjusting to university life, you’re not expected to handle everything alone.

You can book individual sessions, join group meetings, or take part in peer-to-peer support run by students who understand what you’re going through. Our counselor works alongside the Welfare team to help you spot stress triggers, build healthier habits, and handle anything from personal relationships to academic pressure.

Peer-to-peer sessions are a great first step if you’d rather talk to people your own age, or if you just need a space where sharing feels easier. No matter which route you choose, everything is confidential, and the goal is simple: to help you feel safe, supported, and capable of managing whatever comes your way.

MIUC’s Student Welfare Support is here to help you protect your wellbeing, strengthen your academic journey, and feel at home during your time with us.

Career & Life Coaching

Coaching at MIUC is a confidential space designed to help you develop personally and professionally. It gives you the chance to understand your challenges more clearly, set goals that genuinely matter to you, and build the skills to move forward with confidence. Sessions take place one-to-one, where your coach guides you through open questions to help you gain clarity, stay focused, and create realistic action plans. You’re encouraged to bring a topic you want to explore, whether it’s academic pressure, confidence, communication, interviews, time management, or simply the sense that things could be going better.

Coaching isn’t therapy and it isn’t advice-giving. It’s a process that strengthens your ability to lead yourself, make decisions, and grow. If coaching isn’t the right fit, you can be connected to other support services, and you’re welcome to use several at once.

To begin, you simply book a 30-minute introductory consultation through the provided link. After that, the number of sessions depends on your goals, usually between four and twelve, with time between meetings to put new approaches into practice.
