Model United Nations 2025 at Marbella International University Centre

On 24th and 25th April, our students organised the 2025 edition of MUN at MIUC! During the conference, the student participants took on the roles of delegates in the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). Prior to the conference, they were assigned different UN-recognised countries, and they had time for in-depth research on the foreign policy of their countries and the countries’ stances on the selected conference topics. While representing 22 countries from various parts of the world, the students debated and proposed resolutions on global issues.

The topic of the first day was “Recognition of Climate Refugees”, where students focused on global climate-related migration, climate change, and the need for regulations, policies and human rights protection laws for climate refugees. On the second day, the topic was “Drone Warfare”, which raised discussions about the need for the establishment of international norms and regulations for military drone and autonomous weapon use.

The Planning Committee of MUN is the team of students who organised this event. This year, it consisted of six enthusiastic students who took the roles of the President, the Chair, the Secretary General, the Undersecretary General and the Press and Marketing Team Officers of the event. The Secretary General of this conference was Mariia Symonenko, a Level 5 International Relations and Politics student. Her responsibilities as the chief administrative officer included supervising the Planning Committee team and the participating students, as well as leading and overseeing all aspects of the event, such as planning, organisation and execution. The Undersecretary General of this year’s conference was Christian André Aavitsland, a Level 5 International Relations and Politics student. Stephanie Lebedeva-Lopez, a Level 5 International Relations and Politics student, was the President of the conference and Kelsey Umutoni Rwanga, a Level 5 International Business Management student, was the Chair. They were contributing to the organisation and were running the conference! The President and the Chair, known as the Dias, were leading the General Assembly and played a key role in maintaining the rules and procedures. The members of the Press and Marketing Team were Chaimae Baqasse and Ava Angelea Robertson, Level 5 International Business Management students. They were documenting the event by taking memorable photos and videos.

Aside from the hard-working students, an honourable guest speaker and professors from MIUC took part in the event. Dr Ian Begg Sinclair, an expert in the financial sector with experience in international development, joined the conference as a guest speaker. He shared an inspirational speech during the opening ceremony, observed the participation of all students and closed the conference with his thoughtful final remarks.

Our lecturers, Juho Ahava, PhD, and Christophe de Landtsheer, MSc, were the jury members of the conference, together with the Secretary General. The jury members attentively observed the delegates, their participation, how well they followed the procedure, and how accurately they represented their countries. By the end of the conference, they had chosen the award-winning delegates.

This year, the most outstanding and award-winning delegates were: Luis Fidel Wollmann, Level 7 International Relations student, the delegate of France – 1st Place Best Delegate award; Luis Octavio Moreno, Level 5 International Business Management student, the delegate of Colombia – 2nd Place Best Delegate award; Dakota Mae Flaget, Level 5 International Relations and Politics student, the delegate of Russia – Best Speaker award; Christian André Aavitsland, Level 5 International Relations and Politics student, the delegate of Iran – Best Resolution award.
