Bootcamp on AI, Business & Geopolitics: Global Interdependence, Opportunities, and Challenges
Earlier this month, as part of the ConnectEd initiative, Dr Hind Arroub, a lecturer at MIUC and an expert in AI, conducted a highly insightful and intensive bootcamp titled “AI, Business & Geopolitics: Global Interdependence, Opportunities, and Challenges.” Recognised as one of the 100 brilliant and inspiring women globally on the 2025 list by the Women in AI Ethics Foundation, Dr Arroub, whose expertise spans international law, governance, and emerging technologies, led participants through an in-depth exploration of how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming global economies, industries, and geopolitical landscapes.
The “AI, Business & Geopolitics: Global Interdependence, Opportunities, and Challenges” bootcamp examined key topics such as AI-driven economic transformations, the competitive AI strategies of the United States and China, and the legal and ethical implications of AI in global commerce. Designed to provide both theoretical insights and practical applications, the programme equipped participants with strategic knowledge on AI-driven entrepreneurship, career opportunities, and regulatory challenges, preparing them for success in an AI-dominated business environment.
A foundational exploration of AI introduced participants to its historical evolution, key concepts, and major industry players. Discussions traced the trajectory of AI from theoretical models in the 1950s to its current role as a central driver of business and technological transformation. Participants examined fundamental AI principles, including machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI, with real-world applications in sectors such as finance, healthcare, and logistics. The impact of AI on business was explored through case studies demonstrating its role in automation, predictive analytics, and customer personalisation, highlighting how companies leverage AI to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and create new business models. Additionally, the programme addressed AI’s influence on the labour market, analysing both job displacement due to automation and the emergence of AI-driven career opportunities.
The geopolitical dimensions of AI were examined through an in-depth analysis of the technological rivalry between the United States and China, as well as the global regulatory landscape shaping AI’s development. The strategic competition between these superpowers was discussed in terms of investment in AI research, control over semiconductor production, and the broader implications of AI’s integration into military and economic strategies. The discussions covered China’s Digital Silk Road initiative and its role in AI-powered surveillance, governance, and digital infrastructure, alongside the United States’ policies on AI regulation, security, and technological leadership. Participants critically assessed international AI governance frameworks, including the EU AI Act, the US AI Bill of Rights, and China’s AI regulations, with a focus on ethical considerations such as fairness, transparency, accountability, and data privacy in AI development and deployment.
Future-oriented discussions addressed the opportunities and challenges AI presents across various global industries, from autonomous vehicles and robotics to AI-driven climate solutions and advancements in personalised medicine. The role of AI in tackling global challenges, such as pandemics, food security, and cybersecurity, was analysed through case studies demonstrating AI’s potential to accelerate medical research, improve disaster response, and enhance digital safety. Investment trends and venture capital funding in AI startups were explored, with a focus on how AI businesses are reshaping industries and generating new economic opportunities. The bootcamp concluded with a discussion on the responsible integration of AI into business and policy, exploring how organisations and governments can ensure ethical AI adoption while maintaining competitiveness in an increasingly AI-dominated global economy.
