Lecture: International conflict management of the European Union in the Western Balkans (1990-2000s)

On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of hosting a guest speaker, Fanni Elek, PhD candidate, who delivered a lecture on Conflict Resolution, Crisis Management, and Diplomacy (Topic of the Week: International Conflict Management of the European Union)
This session was focused on the conflict management of the European
Union as a reaction to the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s, focusing on key missions and
diplomatic initiatives in order to help stabilise the region. The lecture had a
special focus on Bosnia and Hercegovina and Kosovo, giving a short overview of the
causes of war, such as deep-rooted ethnic divisions. Through the analysis of these
missions, they discussed the EU’s limitations and successes in peace building,
coordination with NATO and the UN, and the long-term impact of these interventions
on the EU’s approach to regional stability and conflict management of the Western
Balkans region.
